Dear everyone,
Here we go, time for an update from my first weeks on board…
After a long weekend of travel, the moment finally arrived: on Sunday, August 3rd, I arrived on the African Mercy. What an enormous ship, it’s really unbelievable!! The first
week was overwhelming, a bit tiring but also really fun : ) I got lost about 784 times, learned (and already forgot) about 645 new names, and attended endless orientation sessions.
During that first week, it became clear that I would also be teaching 2nd grade, because at the last minute a teacher couldn’t come. I have been so warmly welcomed by the families, colleagues, and crew on board. My classroom is a wonderful space with everything you need; it even has four windows, which is real luxury here on the ship!
After a preparation week, it was time: Back to School Night! On Monday evening we started together with a speech from the principal, although it felt a bit like we were in a football stadium where every teacher was a goal! The kids and teens were so excited: they cheered, clapped, and shouted for everything. Tuesday was the first school day; the Academy was filled with students and it was so much fun! My students are incredibly kind, engaged, enthusiastic, and curious kids.
Madagascar is a beautiful country. I really enjoy the sunshine, the stunning beaches, and discovering a new culture. The Malagasy people are open, friendly, and love blonde hair : )
Life in a community is something I really enjoy! There is so much to do on board and there is always someone to chat with : ) I’ve officially become the queen of small talk: (Good morning, how is it going? Yeah, good! How are you? × 9999). It’s special to be in a place with so many different cultures living together and all being part of the work of Mercy Ships.
I want to thank you all for the cards, letters, messages, calls, and prayers I have received. They have been incredibly encouraging to me!
Kind regards, Norah
